Review: 

While generally well written, I found Without a Heartbeat disappointing overall. The majority of the book I would say is full of recycled old ideas and I didn't really get into the story until maybe the last quarter of it when the author relied more upon his own ideas of his world. There were also numerous typos throughout this book, where often times the same wrong words were used. I do wish I had read this before reading The Awakening, which I kind of want to read over again now that I know Scarlett's story. Although I'm not sure I would have been so interested in reading the Hasea Chronicles based on this story alone.

Review:

I was using this sponge for a few weeks before I finally read somewhere that you're supposed to wet it down first. Oops. That would have been good to know with some instructions.

(Why do these things never come with instructions?)

I had read one of the benefits of these sponges is that the makeup doesn't stick to the sponge so much so you actually don't lose makeup by having it all soaked up. Honestly, I didn't really notice a difference with the absorption of this sponge versus say the little sponge wedges. Here's a picture I took today and you can see that after several uses it definitely is tainted by my makeup.

I haven't used the carrying case at all but I know from the way it arrived that the case obviously doesn't stay shut when being jostled around a bunch.

This sponge is easy to use, and once I started wetting it down I fell in love. It creates a much more natural which I absolutely love. I always have a problem with my foundation looking too dry and cakey and yucky. When I use this sponge, my makeup is much more even and it's much more difficult to notice I'm even wearing foundation, which makes me happy. I'll definitely keep using this sponge and get a replacement when the time comes.

I don't blog about makeup much but I just want to talk about my makeup for a second. I'm wearing Cover Girl Clean Normal Skin in Creamy Natural liquid foundation topped with Cover Girl + Olay pressed powder in light (I got this at 75% off last week, woohoo! yes, I love my Cover Girl foundation.)

I *finally* figured out my trick to applying eye makeup without getting raccoon eye last week (thank you Ipsy!) After doing my foundation, I start with mascara. Yes, I do mascara before eyeshadow. This seems so backwards but apparently it's what works for me. If I do the eyeshadow first, once I apply the mascara and then the eyeliner, I just end up with black smudges everywhere under my eyes and it's awful. I already have dark circles under my eyes, I don't need fake ones to highlight that fact :P

Anyway, I'm also wearing several products I received in my September Ipsy bag:  the treStique mini matte lip crayon in Nantucket Nude, Starlooks Pro Luxe Longwear eyeliner pen (from my August Ipsy bag), Pixi by Petra Mini Brow Trio in Shades of Brow. On my eyes which you can't really see, I applied First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream (I forgot to apply it to my entire face first, oops) topped with my Nyx Ipsy eyeshadow trio which I really love. I'm pretty happy with all of these products so far.

I've known about the importance of proper pH for a very long time, because it's one of the things Teresa Tapp talks about. I was curious about checking my own pH as it is an important factor for weight loss. Smart Solutions provided me with one of their pH test strip kits to try out, so here is some more information about it for those not familiar.

Review:

These strips are pretty straight forward and easy to use. I like that you have the option of doing either a saliva or urine test with these and I also like that it comes in a plastic case which makes storage simple and protects the testing sticks from outside contaminants.

I used these by both methods with similar results. It looks like I'm slightly acidic with a pH of 6.5 so that's something I will be working on. I hope to improve my pH by drinking lemon water alone. With being sick the past few weeks I just haven't thought to do this test much so it's something I'll focus more on when I'm feeling better.

When I first received this in the mail, my boyfriend's sister and her husband were over and of course they were curious and had to try this out. They both tested alkaline while Mike tested acidic so it's probably the food we're eating (we had eaten acidic foods previously.) Having others here to test out this product for me was a nice bonus just to see the different results.

The only thing I don't like about these test strips, and I think you can tell from my picture, is that the colors don't exactly match the chart. I know it's difficult to simulate colors and get a perfect match and of course I'm used to this kind of thing from doing test kits on my aquarium water. However, the four of us all tested our saliva and we each felt the color green on our results wasn't anywhere on the color chart. We tended to just go by the shade of yellow to determine our pH levels.

We also noticed the longer these strips sat, they changed color, so this is something to consider. I know when it comes to aquarium test strips, they're not supposed to be as accurate as using the test tube method, so I don't know if that's true for these or not. Just a random thought and observation.

Review:
There are a lot of things I like about this water bottle: it's made out of glass and bpa free so I don't have to worry about chemicals found in plastic plus of course glass is just easier to clean. It is very easy to take apart so cleaning is simple. The silicone grip is nice because I can see how it would be difficult to grip this bottle without it when sweating. I really like the button lid lock which makes it easy to use yet helps prevent against spills. The plastic loop is also kind of nice because it makes this easier to pick up when you have your hands full. Unlike some other water bottles, this is supposed to be dishwasher safe but I don't have one to test that.

I just have a few issues with this water bottle. First, the infuser is supposed to be removable but don't ask me how you get that thing out. It almost seems like it should have come with a tool to hook it out or something. Mine is stuck within my bottle pretty tight so it's not going anyway. Additionally, there weren't any real kind of instructions with this so initially I was left with a few questions:

• Do I need to squeeze the fruit to release some of the juices?
• How long does the fruit need to sit within the bottle?
• How many ounces is this? It doesn't say anywhere on the packaging.

I filled and refilled this bottle throughout the day with a few types of different fruit. While I could definitely smell the fruit I couldn't really taste it much. I think I think next time I add some fruit to my bottle I will try squeezing more of the juice out first.

Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs Review

Well last week I learned a valuable lesson. Don't go hiking with bronchitis even if you are almost all better. I went hiking last Saturday and all it did was wear me out and re aggravate my poor sick body so I was pretty much too tired to do much of anything last week which is why I haven't blogged in awhile. 

But anyway today I'm going to talk about a product I received from Influenster for review. I have to say this is the worst Voxbox I've gotten and I know I'm not alone in this opinion. I wish Influenster told you exactly what you were getting in your Voxbox ahead of time and then gave you the option to opt out. Anyway...

This is the Voxbox I received. My first problem with this box was Influenster led me to believe I was getting a full sized product. Instead I received a small sample size at .75 fluid ounces. Now that I've actually tried the product I'm glad I only got a sample size. 

I applied the product to my left leg using just about a quarter size amount as described in the directions. I gently rubbed it on my leg and foot stopping at above the knee. 

Here's the good: this applied easily with no noticeable streaks and it didn't take much product. 

The bad: it turned me orange. If this is what natural tan is supposed to look like then no one would want to be tan. This was seriously bad. Not just orange but it made my feet just look dirty. Additionally it came off on my clothes and I'm still waiting to see if they've stained or not. I left this on for a few hours just to test the lasting power. By the time I washed it off I couldn't even tell what I was washing off. I think some of it did wear off throughout the day. 

On the bright side at least this was just makeup and it didn't actually stain my skin orange. 

I won't be using the coupon because I definitely won't be purchasing this ever. I might just throw away the sample - something I never do - or stash it with my Halloween makeup.

I'm back again today, this time with an ebook review. I have to say, if you read just one fantasy book this year make it Dreams of Beautiful Whisper. If you're a fan of fantasy and stories about elves in particular, you absolutely have to read this book and I am not just saying that. It's so rare you find such a treasure and I'm fortunate today to share with you my review of Tanya Jones's Dreams of Beautiful Whisper.

Review:
 Ironically, when I began reading this book at first I absolutely hated the main character, Amanda. So much so that I wanted to just put the book down and not look at it again. Fortunately I kept reading and absolutely fell in love with her story. At first I found the title a bit odd, but after finishing the book and understanding the title I feel it's just perfect. There's just a few things I disliked about this book: aside from the typical spoiled teenager spiel at the beginning which was very necessary, there are a few grammar errors and things like confusion of past and present tense. Additionally, the long list of powers, while somewhat adding to the storyline, was overkill. It was just too long and I found myself just skimming the list, very much like what a regular teenager would most likely do. Those few things aside, I absolutely love Dreams of Beautiful Whisper and more books from Jones simply cannot come soon enough. I found this to be one of those instances where I really wanted to finish reading the book because it was so good yet at the same time I didn't want it to be over. The story was too short for me, as I just did not want to stop reading. I certainly hope Jones has a very long list of books and ideas to continue in her future because she's made me an instant die hard fan with this one book.

  Review:
I've noticed with other oil concoctions peppermint and eucalyptus are often missing which seems like the obvious oils to use when you need something to help you breathe better. I used this oil in combination with my Thieves oil or Health Shield just for added effect. I really like this oil because of the inclusion of peppermint and eucalyptus. It definitely helps with my breathing. However, the first time I used this oil I forgot about it containing lemon when I used this at night so it did keep me awake which is odd because lemon usually doesn't effect me that much. So I've found this is a wonderful oil to use in the morning to help clear my sinuses but also help boost my energy. I just spread a little bit on my chest and it seems to help immediately and it really doesn't take much. 

If you look at my picture, you will notice my bottle of oil was completely covered in oil when I received it. I've had this problem in the past with this brand and this was the worst example.  Once again, it wasn't a matter of product leaking during shipping. This was lack of proper clean up of product before shipping, which I just find ridiculous. Otherwise I take no issue with this product.

Review: 
I previously reviewed the Time Stopper here so I will only be reviewing the other two books.

I actually don't usually go out of my way to recommend products to people unless I'm doing reviews or they specifically ask for my opinion, but I found myself recommending Mind Dimensions several times within my book club on Facebook. While there is a hint of a liberal viewpoint behind these books, I enjoyed them regardless. I really enjoyed reading the beginning of Darren's story in the Thought Readers, and finding Mira so involved in the series. Some of the ideas behind these stories aren't exactly knew, but The Thought Pushers was full of twists and I found myself mentally yelling at the author at one point: "No he did not just do that!" Speaking of old ideas, I think what makes these books so good is that although some of the ideas aren't exactly new, many of the old clichés are avoided. This kind of experience, well written story telling is so rare and I'm happy to have found such a gem in the Mind Dimensions. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Galleany Manual Coffee Grinder

I kind of suspect my boyfriend created a monster when he suggested I try drinking coffee to help with my headache. Why? Because as it turns out, coffee is one of the very few things which seems to help. Or at least it helps with my daily tension headache. I say he created a monster because I just stocked up on coffee because my local grocery store was having a really good sale and I got 5 containers worth, regularly priced at $8.99 for $6 each. Yes, I love a good sale. On that note, I recently purchased a bag of Eight O'Clock coffee from Amazon. The very day I got it in the mail, I looked on Amazon to check on the price and I saw it was about $35. WHAT?? I know I didn't pay that much for it because there's no way I would have. No, I didn't. I somehow got it at a discounted price of just under $15 so I won't question it but I'll be happy for those kinds of savings. I have no clue how much this costs in store (I should have looked today, duh.) I tried this coffee for the first time this morning, and I have to say the hazelnut flavor is not what I expected but it was really good. It was also my first time trying Arabica coffee and I'm definitely going to stick with Robusta for my morning wake up but I think this will make a good afternoon / evening coffee.

Anyway, today's blog post is supposed to be about my coffee grinder from Galleany. I do want to mention that I just received this item yesterday so I have only tried it once. The business was in a rush to get our reviews done. Normally I would test out a product much more thoroughly, but in this case the product seems pretty straight forward so I don't have an issue with more limited testing however I did want to be honest and up front with my readers. If I do end up having any problems, I will update this as needed. edit: I was reminded that Amazon does drop people for reviewing things too quickly sometimes so I have deleted my Amazon review just in case and I will not be doing this type of thing again. 1 week minimum for most reviews :)

Review:
First of all, this product was made in China which means unfortunately the instructions are a bit confusing and to some extent don't make much sense. Fortunately this grinder is pretty simple to use so I just ignored most of the instructions. The use is straight forward: open the cap, fill with beans, place the cap back on, attach the handle and then start turning to grind until you feel no more beans are left to be ground. Simple, and with my boyfriend's help (he felt I was struggling with grinding, which I wasn't) it only took about a minute to grind enough for my morning coffee. I did readjust the burr grinder setting prior to using it so that I didn't get quite as fine a coffee, and it seemed to be comparable to pre-ground store brands.

This grinder is easy to take apart so I'm confident it will be easy enough to clean as well. The handle comes off which makes it nice for easy storage yet at the same time it's kind of flimsy if you wanted to keep this grinder out for daily use. The handle just slides off so there really isn't anything keeping it attached to the grinder. This seems more practical for camping purposes, which I know they have advertised this for. However, just hope you don't lose the handle! Additionally, the pieces almost seem to come apart a little bit too easy. I have a slight concern about the bottom piece falling off while in use, but so far no problems.

Overall, I do feel this is a good product. It was far easier to use than I expected. It seems sturdy enough for daily use. Also, the collection container does have a little window so you can see your coffee filling up while being grounded so that's a nice feature.

Mega Mineral - All in One Multi Mineral Review

Good morning my loyal readers. I have little to really talk about for once, so I'm going to go straight to the review for today. I remember several years ago my sister once advised me that she had better weight loss results while taking a multi-mineral, so when the opportunity presented itself, I thought "Why not?" Today I will be reviewing Mega Mineral from alohaGenix.

 Review:

I like this multi-mineral because it does contain a lot of key minerals, especially magnesium potassium and calcium which is like a holy trio of minerals in my book. I also like this product because it does not contain iron. As a woman, I know a lot of times I may be low on iron but I always worry about taking products which contain iron because there is such a thing as too much. Coming from Ohio, a state where thyroid problems are a major issue, I also like that iodine is included in the supplement. I'm also a firm believer in using D3 for overall health so I like that this is included as well. Those are just the few minerals in this product which I'm most familiar with.

As for the product itself, hopefully you can tell from the picture these tablets are quite large so if you have difficulty swallowing pills this may be a concern. To be honest, the majority of the time I was testing these, I was only taking half a dosage! I somehow didn't read the serving size correctly or something so that was my mistake. However, once I did up the dosage to two tablets I did notice I seem to have more energy. Although I'm sick, I don't feel nearly as sick and drained as I normally do so I'm guessing the Zinc and D3 in this has really helped.

I should mention that I am very sensitive to supplements so in general I do notice subtle results very quickly, in general. I didn't really notice much difference with this until I increased the dosage although as I mentioned I think it has helped keep me healthier upon reflection.

I wish I could give more feedback on this product since these things can take a long time to notice obvious results. Unfortunately I'm under a time limit for this post but I will update if I notice any other changes.
