Ebook: Bestselling Fantasy Novel, The Awakening Review

I received this item for free from Tomoson.com in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

One of the fun and interesting things about being a writer and e-book reviewer is once in awhile coming across books which seem as though they parallel my own universe to some extent. Today's review is for a book which did just that. My thanks to Stuart Meczes for providing me with an e-book copy of The Awakening for review.

Blurb:
The Awakening  is the first book in the top 100 Amazon bestselling YA urban fantasy series, Hasea Chronicles, by British author Stuart Meczes.

Alexander Eden is one unhappy teenager. A geeky, social pariah, he's the victim of constant bullying at school. His home life isn't much better with a stepfather who resents him and a half brother who is better than him at everything.

But that all changes the day the mysterious and beautiful Gabriella De Luca walks into his life. Everyone wants to know her, to be with her. But she is interested in Alex.

Because Alex is different.

Soon afterwards he is thrown into a world he never thought possible. A world where he and others like him are the last line of defence. A world where an ancient unspeakable evil lurks.
Evil which seeks to consume him.

Review:
To be honest, when I saw this item available for review, I was hesitant to try it just based upon the picture alone. I'm not fond of this picture, as I feel it kind of has a military feel to it which made me think of crime stories which just aren't my thing. However, I received a personal invite from the author, read the description of the book, and decided to give it a shot. First, I just have to say that Stuart Meczes is amazing. Not only did he provide me with The Awakening, but he also gave me two more novels which I will review once I get caught up on some other reading and reviews first :) So thanks again Stuart for your generosity!

So they say not to judge a book by its cover, and in this case it's very true. The Awakening is easily one of the very best books I've read in a long time. The author's writing style is excellent, being fun and easy to read. The story is captivating, very original and enjoyable. Although throughout the read I was reminded of different media such as X-Men, the Matrix, Men in Black, the Mortal Instruments and most of all Harry Potter, the over all effect is a very nice combination making for a very unique story. I know it's over said quite over, but in this case I sincerely did not want to put this book down. I was kept on the edge of my seat, and some of the moments were just flat out heart wrenching. Overall, the character development was good. The only parts I didn't care for was some of the drinking, but that's just me. I am looking forward to reading the remaining books in the Hasea Chronicles.

The Awakening can be purchased at Amazon.com for $2.99.
