Hard Candy Fireworks: Memorial Day Manicure
I have nothing to disclose.
Today I'm sharing my Memorial Day manicure with you, yes a couple of days late. If you don't live in the US, this is a national holiday reserved for remembering those in the military who died during service. (Side note, if you haven't seen this video from Mark Dice, you should. It's quite disturbing!)
I'm late in posting, in part because I spent the weekend with my boyfriend, but also spent some time reflecting and thinking about all of those people who fought so hard to keep our country safe. For me, this is personal. One of my ancestors, Private William Slusser, was killed at Vicksburg during the Civil War. He left behind 1 son - my ancestor, a daughter, and wife. Perhaps more children I'm unaware of.
Fast forward about 50 years later, and his descendant, my great Uncle Mickey Slusser was born. Uncle Mickey joined the army at the age of 18, during World War II. He fought in both Korea and Vietnam. Twice he came very close to losing his life. One time in particular he was injured but refused treatment until he had first made certain all of his men were safe. I'm sure he did and saw things I couldn't even imagine. His wife Rita was a Nazi Holocaust survivor, the sole survivor among her family. They lived in Texas, so I never really knew either of them although I do remember meeting Uncle Mickey a few times. The little of their lives I do know is very inspiring. Fortunately Uncle Mickey was not a causality of war - his death came quickly from fast spreading cancer. Regardless, I cannot think of the military and all of our men and women who serve, without thinking of my uncle.
I spent part of the past weekend researching my family genealogy, and in doing so I found a picture of Uncle Mickey's tombstone. His sister, June, joined him in heaven this past weekend so my thoughts have turned to her as well.

I do have a manicure to share with you today as well. I think since this post is already so long I'll just share a few pictures with you today and I'll share some more in my next post... along with the update to this manicure.
I applied 2 coats of Hard Candy Fireworks over Avon Blue Water Lilies. It looked pretty neat in person but on camera it turned out much more purple than in real life.. the blue really shine through with the flash unfortunately.
This is much closer to how it actually looked! As usual, please pardon the mess :P
Mike really liked how this manicure turned out, he really liked the glitter. I, did not. I think I should have just used 2 coats. This polish definitely falls into the glitter bomb category I believe and maybe I'm just not used to so much glitter but I wasn't crazy about it. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but one of the weird things about this polish is the inclusion of red stringy glitter and no I don't mean bar glitter. This glitter is just weird and I've never seen anything like it. I'm not sure how I feel about it!
Next time, this one will be going over white to test out and definitely only 1 coat!

Avon Blue Water Lilies
I have nothing to disclose. I won this product.
Today I'm showing you the undie I wore for my Memorial Day manicure which I haven't shown you yet. Avon Blue Water Lilies is a really pretty sky blue shimmer. Unfortunately, I didn't realize it but it was very humid here the day I painted my nails so the polish didn't go on quite right.. I'll have to try it some other time to get a better idea of the quality of the polish. I can tell you the color is really pretty! This is two coats.
Have you tried Avon polishes? What do you think of them? I'd love to know!

Rapid weight loss is not an answer!
I have nothing to disclose.
Losing weight is something almost all of us struggle with at one point in time or another throughout our lives. I myself have been trying to get into shape by losing inches - not weight - for several years now. It's been a real challenge because I do have many health issues to deal with which make losing weight more difficult. Brain injury, specifically, I have read sometimes makes it almost impossible to lose weight.
Regardless, I have lost and kept off about 20 pounds, I've lost one clothing size. Actually, when I started with T-tapp, I was wearing an XL and now I can squeeze myself into a size small top if I wanted to. I spend A LOT of time tweaking things, researching new information to make sure I'm eating the healthiest food possible. I exercise depending upon my health but typically between 4 - 6 hours a week. Sometimes more than that, sometimes a lot less. I'm not perfect, and I do still have a lot to learn. I'm not yet as in shape as I'd like, but all things considered I've done pretty well and I am a lot healthier and stronger. I stopped measuring my weight loss and inch loss a long time ago, because I have faith in that I'm doing what I have to do in order to get into the healthy shape I want. Also, because I do T-tapp I do believe I'm a little bit taller, because T-tapp helps build muscle and bone. Enough about that though, I'm not writing this to preach about how great T-tapp is.
I'm writing this because this past weekend I read a beauty blogger post about a new weight loss program she was going to follow. Her goal: lose 35 pounds in 40 days. Her plan? To eat 500 - 700 calories per day.
Speaking as someone who in the past has actually eaten 500 - 1000 calories a day, and not by choice, I can tell you first hand starving yourself is NEVER the answer. It damages you both in mind and body. You can research starvation mode, and while you'll find conflicting results, I can tell you my real life experiences have proven starvation mode does make it more difficult to lose weight. It slows down your metabolism so once you start eating normal again you put on the weight much faster and it's harder to burn it off. It's been several years since I experienced what it was like to starve and I still have days in which I struggle with overeating. There's still that part of my mind which worries that I am going to starve. I would never encourage anyone to starve themselves on purpose and I find it quite sick that some people do.
I'm rather upset by this, and I did write her and encourage her to do more research before going through with this plan. She responded by telling me she was hesitant at first but she did research on it and found it to be sound. She also suggested that eating healthy was part of this entire plan. Now I'm no expert, but I do know plenty enough to know that eating 500 - 700 calories a day is NOT healthy. Finally - and I found this incredibly rude - she suggested I do more research on the subject before judging.
Let's do that, shall we?
I started by trying to find information about this program. I found little to no real information. All I found was the company's Web site and their Facebook page, which has under 100 likes. If the program works so well, and actually works, I would expect it to have more likes. (For instance, T-tapp has over 8K likes on Facebook and Zumba of course has over 5 million.)
Additionally, the site contains no honest reviews from it's customers, no before and after pictures. I should point out, I did not anywhere on their Web site find recommendations for such drastic measures. What I see is a quickly made Web site with bare minimum information and no real scientific evidence or real results. False promises for those desperate enough to try anything.
Since I cannot find any information on the success of (or lack thereof) this program, other than the program's own information, let me go further and explain why this program is a set up for failure.
Here's the simple answer:
"'When you eat too few calories, you lose fat but also precious muscle, which is the worst thing you could do because it slows your metabolism and makes it more difficult to increase exercise intensity or duration,' Dansinger says.
Fad diets also set you up for failure by depriving you of what you want. You can't eat like that for long, and it's too likely that you'll rebel and end up back where you started. You deserve better than that!"
(from WebMD: http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/lose-weight-fast-how-to-do-it-safely?page=2)
The blogger claims the program she plans to follow does not destroy muscle because she's taking a supplement which prevents muscle loss. I'm sorry, but there are no magical pills and if you chose to believe so, you're just fooling yourself.
I'm thoroughly disgusted that this program is being promoted by a beauty blogger and I seriously hope her readers will do research on their own before following in her path. I find it very irresponsible and I will no longer be following the blog involved. I'm just as disturbed to know that a a registered nurse has encouraged her to do such a dramatic program.
All of that being said, this was an interesting reminder that yes, I now pretty much only post about nail polish. This was never really my goal with this blog. Once I settled on posting about nail polish, I always had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to some day post about other beauty and health topics. For whatever reason, I've felt as though I couldn't post about those things as long as I wasn't happy with where I was at in my own personal "weightloss" journey. That's so silly! So often I've read from many experts who say becoming fit is a journey, and it should be an enjoyable one. I should have fun with this, and I do enjoy blogging so perhaps I may blog about some more health and beauty topics in the time to come. We shall see, as I think and reflect upon it.
(I have a TON more I could say on this subject, and a lot of really negative things I would like to say but I decided I should keep it "short" :P)

Sally Hansen Strobe Light
I have nothing to disclose.
If you're looking for a drugstore brand holo glitter, I have a beautiful one to share with you today! Sally Hansen Strobe Light is part of their Hard As Nails/ Xtreme Wear colors. It is a rose base polish full of hexagon silver holo glitters and tiny little copper glitters.
As usual, the camera doesn't capture the full beauty of this polish, sadly. I do have a manicure planned for next Monday but I have to say I might be late in posting it because I'm not anywhere ready to take off Strobe Light yet! It's just so pretty, I can't stop staring at it!
Here's a couple of photos with the flash. I painted it over 2 coats of Hard Candy Shot of Lemon and 2 coats of Kleancolor Neon Yellow. I found the best way to work with this polish was to try to apply one thick coat and then just randomly dab on at any missing spots.
edit: forgot to include a closeup!
These are without the flash. You can see it's a much different color in regular light. I never thought I would like such a sandy color on my nails but I really love it!
We are currently trying to get adjusted to being awake during the day again which hopefully will mean some pictures out in the sun at some point in time! I may have to play with this again some time just to get some sunlight pictures!
Strobe light is available at drugstores. Target sells it for just $2.49 which is quite a steal for such a pretty polish.

Hard Candy Shot of Lemon
I have nothing to disclose.
Today I have one of the newer Hard Candy polishes to show you, a gorgeous yellow called Shot of Lemon. This polish is from the Itzy Glitzy collection and it is a sheer shimmer. It is shown here with 2 coats over 2 coats of Kleancolor Neon Yellow.
I really love this color so I had to share a TON of pictures of it :)
Here you can see some of the gorgeous shimmer a little bit better, taken in the shade.
Love this polish and I'm looking forward to trying out another Hard Candy polish next week :)

Kleancolor not so Neon Yellow
I have nothing to disclose. I purchased this item.
This week I decided to play with some of my yellow and first up is Kleancolor Neon Yellow. I swear someone mixed around with the color selections when they decided this color would be their neon yellow. It's not neon and certainly not neon yellow. It's more mustard color.
Please pardon the wear on the pinkie.. I tried peeling off the polish on my cuticles and accidentally took some of the polish on my nail with it :P
This is two coats and you'll see it's pretty sheer. I'll be layering something over this later this week so I wasn't too worried about the opacity.
I'm not sure how I feel about this color, considering I've spent the majority of my life hating yellow. Because I'm so yellow toned, it kind of just blends in with my natural skin tone from a distance.
The polish itself I didn't really have any problems with. It was a little stinky but the smell wasn't making me really sick like some of their polishes do.
I think I'll mostly be saving this one for use as an accent color or for nail art.

Fishtail manicure
I have nothing to disclose. The polishes used here were either gifts, giveaway prizes or I purchased them myself.
Last week I decided to do a fishtail manicure because I haven't done it in a very long time and this was only the second time I've done it. I used Avon Forget Me Not Blue as the base, and Sinful Colors Cloud 9 and Zoya Ziv as the accents. For the accent nail, I used Cloud 9 and Shany nail art number 14.
I ended up not being crazy about this color combination and the polish started chipping after just a couple of days so I only wore it for a few days. I think the pictures were all taken with a flash so the colors were darker in life and had a nice autumn feel to them. It was pretty, the combination just was not to my taste.

Nail mail from Polished Cousins and Essie!
The items listed in this post are giveaway prizes or samples.
On May 14 I won a giveaway over at Polished Cousins, and I received the prize on the 18th! Talk about fast shipping! Wow thank you Cousins! I won 12 Sation polishes, wow! I had never even heard of Sation until I started blogging so I'm excited to try these out. I'll definitely be doing something with some of these soon. I expected these to be mostly cremes and I was in for a surprise.
edit: I totally forgot to mention that with these I now have 300+ polishes!
C: Stirring Silver
D: Seriously Slate
E: Paint Some Sugar on Me
F: Chocolate Chip Resistant
G: I'm So Ogre It
H: Super Nail-tural Powers
I: Queenie In A Bottle
J: Trench Coat
K: Strawberries
L: Electrical Storm
M: Midnight Blue
N: Blue Sky's the Limit
Just from the swatches, I think Queenie In A Bottle (bright pink satin almost matte), Trench Coat (light pink shimmer with silver glitter) and Midnight Blue (metallic blue) are my favorites but I can't wait to try them all.
I also won these pretty earrings which I'm not sure what to do with yet since I can't wear earrings. Thinking about getting some pierced ear protectors to try it at some point in time - I think it's the only thing I haven't tried yet. Otherwise, I'll probably just give them away as a gift :)
I also received my Essie cuticle oil sample which I just wanted to mention so others will know they're being sent out! (With a sneak peak of my manicure from last week :P)
Thanks again to both Essie and the Polished Cousins!

Nail haul, Revlon polishes and some updates
I have nothing to disclose.
OK, so first of all.. I've been very unhappy with the quality of my pictures as of late. Thank you Narmai for suggesting I clean my camera lens (can we say duh?) I think that was part of the problem so look forward to some better quality pictures from now on!
I have a few things to blog about today, but I'm going to start with my newest polish! I had a coupon for Sinful Colors at my local Copps grocery store - just 98 cents per polish and I could use it to buy up to 8 polishes! I only bought one because their selection isn't very good.. so I just bought the one I've had my eyes on for awhile now - Cloud 9.
Speaking of my camera, Narmai also gave me some suggestions for photographing glow in the dark polish. I tried once again, but as you can see.. it just isn't happening. :( At least you can kind of see the bottle glows really well!
Anyway, I have a couple more polish pictures to show you today. I took the butterflies off my fingers a couple of days ago and I decided to play with my new Revlon polishes.
Revlon Sugar Glaze
Revlon Mint Gelato
These didn't quite dry correctly for some reason, so I did mess up the Sugar Glaze manicure. Oh well, it happens! These polishes were a bit thick and a bit difficult to get on easily. But, it's funny.. I went to sleep and woke up a few times trying to figure out why I kept smelling bubblegum - the polish! I'm still not sure what Mint Gelato smells like, as I'm not smelling it.
Thanks for reading :)

Thanks for reading :)

KKCenterHK BLUESEA-FB02C
This post includes a product sample. All opinions are my honest thoughts. Yours may differ.
WARNING: Lots of pictures!
The manicure I have to share with you today is inspired by one of my favorite mangas/animes, Kamisama Kiss (Kamisama Hajimemashita). You can read the manga on MangaFox or watch it on Hulu for free! If you love InuYasha, you might want to give this one a try. There's only 1 anime season but more anime are supposed to be released in August and we're *hoping* for a second season.
(This is the ending theme song which gets stuck in my head like nothing else!)
For this manicure, I'm trying out BLUESEA Butterfly Shaped Black with White Nail Art Decoration # BLUESEA-FB02C.
As you can see from the picture, you get 2 pieces of these nail art decorations. They cost $4 per package. They were easy to apply and I did like how they looked. However, these just are not for me. They snagged on everything which made me thankful I just recently cut my hair. I wish they were a little bit smaller or thinner, as I think they would be easier to wear. The weird thing that bothered me the most about these is the weight. Maybe I'm just being too picky, but it really bothered me to have that little bit of extra weight on just two fingers. You wouldn't think you'd notice something so little and seemingly insignificant but I certainly did. I used nail glue to hold these on, and they were quite difficult to remove - I think just because of the odd shape.
For this manicure, I used Shany Magnetic 04, Daring Digits Ectoplasm, Shany Nail art polishes 04, 06, 09, 12, 16 and 17.
Sorry this picture is so blurry, but you can see pretty well how much these stand out. Now granted, I probably should have placed them a little bit nicer on my nails but I still feel they would have snagged things regardless. (I didn't notice until later that you can see a loose thread attached to the butterfly in my pictures.)
So the entire reason I used these polishes as I did was to get a pretty cool glow in the dark effect, and it didn't quite turn out the way I expected. Here's one shot under black light.
